Books
Here are some excellent books that we’ve read on moviemaking, and would be happy to recommend:
1. ‘Filmmaking for Dummies’ by Bryan Michael Stoller
It provides a good overview of making movies in easy to understand language, and while it covers a lot of movie making in the digital realm, the vast majority of the book can be applied to those of us using cine cameras. A good book to keep by the bedside for a real beginner, or even for those who like to brush up on the basics now and again.
2. ‘The Book of Movie Photography’ by David F. Cheshire
Although old and out of print, this comes up a lot on amazon marketplace, ebay and at second hand book shops so shouldn’t be too hard to get hold of. This book is fantastic. Made at the peak of the cine camera boom, it goes into huge detail on film moviemaking technology, and also is extremely comprehensive at describing all the techniques you will need to make movies. The book is substantially thick and it will take you a long time to study, but make no mistake, this book is a must have.
